Sixteenth-century walls, a courtyard with a lemon tree in it, and rooms that open into one another the way houses were built before corridors. Two of the bedrooms have their original wooden beams.
The courtyard is the centre of the house — it is where breakfast happens, and it stays shaded until mid-afternoon. Off it there is a full kitchen and a sitting room with a fireplace that works in January.
Birgu is the quietest of the Three Cities and the marina is a five-minute walk. Well-behaved dogs are welcome; there is a gate on the courtyard.

Very quiet street, which was the main thing for us. Parking took a couple of minutes to find but never longer.

The photographs do not oversell it. Quiet at night, hot water at full pressure, and the kitchen had everything we needed to cook properly.
